[beasiswa] [INFO] Open Position: Research Assistant (PhD student or Postdoc, full-time), Germany
Effective January 2010, the DATABASE SYSTEMS Chair (Prof. Dr. Torsten
Grust) at the Wilhelm-Schickard- Institute for Computer Science of
Universität Tübingen (Germany), opens a position for a
RESEARCH ASSISTANT (PhD student or Postdoc level, full-time)
in an interdisciplinary research project.
= DECLARATIVE LANGUAGES FOR THE EXPLORATION OF LARGE NETWORK DATA =
In collaboration with colleagues in the cognitive and social sciences as well
psychology we are working on new approaches to the analysis of, potentially
huge, network data. We are particularly interested in network structures that
result from communication and interaction on the Web 2.0 (social networks,
discussion boards, collaborative tagging sites, wikis, etc.).
To enable non-computer scientists to creatively work with such huge data
sets, this project will develop
- declarative database languages for the exploration and analysis
of network data structures.
Your work will build on our group's prior research efforts: the
database-supported evaluation of XQuery (pathfinder- xquery.org,
monetdb-xuqery. org), LINQ (ferry-lang. org), and modern scripting languages
(e.g., Ruby). Further relevant technology includes database distribution and
MapReduce (offline evaluation of non-local social network properties) or the
import of external network data via, e.g., Google's OpenSocial API or RSS
feeds.
= REQUIREMENTS =
We are looking forward to grow our team and welcome applications of highly
motivated candidates with an excellent university degree (Master in Computer
Science or a closely related field) who are willing to support our upcoming
research efforts. We expect you to be open for collaboration with non-computer
scientists. Last but not least, we hope that you like systems building as much
as we do.
The position has no teaching obligations -- if you would like to get involved
with teaching nevertheless, please let us know.
Good knowledge of German as well as English (research and publication) are a
requirement.
= JOB DETAILS AND APPLICATION =
Successful candidates will sign a contract with the Universität Tübingen
under the current regulations applicable to employees in Public Service
(TVÖD). This is a three-year full-time position.
You will be working in Tübingen, the traditional university town in the
Neckar valley (Stuttgart region). Our group offers an informal, open,
and fun working environment.
Universität Tübingen aims at increasing the number of female employees
and thus especially welcomes applications of female candidates.
Applications of disabled candidates will be given priority, depending on

Nine Early Stage Researcher (ESR) positions in five locations (EPFL,
TU Berlin, Technion, FORTH, and U Rennes I)
are funded by the European Commission under the Marie Curie Initial
Training Network Program (project TransForm).
We address (pre-PhD) researchers aiming at significantly improving
their career perspectives from both the
public and private sector.
The duration of the appointment is 3 years, with a possibility of
extension funded from other sources.
RESEARCH TOPIC
The ESRs will pursue research on the general area of concurrent
computing and in particular on the theoretical
foundations of transactional memory.
Multicore architectures have come to stay; yet multicore is useless
without concurrent programming. The
current parallel programming approach of employing locks is widely
considered to be too difficult for any but
a few experts. Transactional Memory (TM) is a new programming
paradigm which is considered by many
researchers as the future of parallel programming. To understand
properly TM systems as well as be able to
assess them and improve them, a rigorous theoretical study of the
approach, its challenges and its benefits is
badly needed.
This is the challenging research goal to be undertaken by the recruited ESRs.
Each recruited ESR will primarily work with one of the academic
partners of the project:
* Swiss Institute of Technology in Lausanne(EPFL) , Switzerland
(Prof. Rachid Guerraoui)
* Technical University of Berlin, Germany (Prof. Anja Feldman & Dr.
Petr Kuznetsov)

20 PhD Scholarships at the International Center for Development and Decent Work- Kassel University, Germany
20 PhD Scholarship Positions for Students from DAC Countries at the International Center for Development and Decent Work (ICDD)
Call for Applications
International Center for Development and Decent Work (ICDD)
Graduate School of Socio-Ecological Research for Development
20 PhD Scholarship Positions for Students from DAC Countries* at the International Center for Development and Decent Work (ICDD)
Starting March 1st, 2010
Deadline for applications: November 15th, 2009
ICDD is an interdisciplinary and international scientific network of excellence with the head office located at the University of Kassel, Germany and partner universities in Latin America, Africa and Asia. ICDD is funded under the programme “Excellence Centers for Exchange and Development” (exceed) launched by the German government through the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Under its Graduate School of Socio-Ecological Research for Development, ICDD invites applications for 20 PhD scholarship positions for studnets from DAC countries at the following internationally renowned universities:
8 at the University of Kassel, Germany in the fields of political and agricultural science,
2 at the Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS), India in the field of sociology,
2 at the Universidade Estaduale de Campinas (Unicamp), Brazil in the field of economics,
2 at the University of Witwatersrand (Wits), South Africa in the field of sociology,
2 at the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF), Pakistan in agricultural science,
2 at the Universidad Autónoma de Yucatan (UADY), Mexico in agricultural science, and
2 at Egerton University (EGU), Kenya in agricultural science.
Background
ICDD's objective is to create and transfer knowledge on how to create and improve work and income opportunities in rural and urban regions of developing countries in light of globalization, climate change and urbanization. ICDD encompasses various disciplines such as agricultural science, political science, sociology, economics, and has a network of partner universities in Asia, Africa and Latin America. ICDD closely co-operates with International Labour Organisation and NGOs.
One of ICDD's core structures for the inter-disciplinary generation of knowledge is the Graduate School of Socio-Ecological Research for Development. PhD projects within this school may be rooted in either the natural or social sciences and should be focused on actor and problem oriented research on sustainable human-environmental relationships and decent livelihoods. ICDD promotes three research clusters as a common framework for the design of prospective PhD projects:
* Countries eligible for Official Development Assistance of the OECD as approved by the Development Assistance Committee (DAC) in August 2009 (cf. list attached)
1) Sustainable Value Creation for Decent Work
This cluster focuses on strategies to increase value creation by developing technologies for more efficient and sustainable use of resources and by improving human skills, preferably along agricultural commodity chains. PhD applicants should be interested in analysing spatially and sectorally detailed urban-rural linkages to address the mobility of people, goods, services, money transfers, information, and associated flows of nutrients, energy and water.
2)Instruments for Promoting Decent Work
This cluster focuses on the effectiveness of existing instruments in enforcing minimum standards for labour as formulated by the International Labour Organization (ILO) such as public procurement, supply chain governance, and national minimum wages. PhD applicants should be interested in analysing such instruments and their effective implementation in different state contexts. A special focus should be directed towards their impact on or relevance for informal labour relations and particularly on the working conditions and lives of temporary labour migrants.
3) Strategies of Empowerment for Decent Work
This cluster focuses on the advocacy of good working conditions within economic and political decision-making processes against the background of eroding capacities of workers to engage in collective action due to the growing informal nature of work. Thereby special attention is directed towards particularly vulnerable groups, such as domestic workers. PhD applicants should be interested in exploring possible sources and forms of organisations to foster empowerment strategies within informal labour relations.
Scholarships
PhD students of the Graduate School will be based either at the University of Kassel or at one of ICDD's international partner universities (see above), and will be enrolled in the respective university's PhD training programmes. Please indicate in your application at which university you wish to be located. A joint international workshop programme on subjects of the ICDD, research methods, the linkage between theory and empirical research and for the presentation of the prospective PhD projects will take place every year within the Graduate School.
Scholarships will be awarded for four years under the precondition of a successful extension after one year. The scholarships will cover a country-specific monthly allowance according to DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) standards. All scholarships will include travel expenses for south-north and south-south mobility if necessary and funding for field research and the participation in Graduate School and ICDD activities.

[beasiswa] [INFO] Ph.D Project in Social and Cultural Anthropology - Univerzität zu Köln
Institut für Ethnologie der Universität zu Köln
Cologne, 24.8.2009
Sonderforschungsber eich/Collaborati ve Research Centre 806 "Our Way to Europe" Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology, University of Cologne, Germany
PhD Position in Social and Cultural Anthropology
We offer a PhD position (salary scale E13/2) for three years (January 2010 – December 2012) as part of the sub-project "Anthropological Models for a Reconstruction of the First African Frontier" in the framework of the new Collaborative Research Centre (CRC)"Our way
to Europe". The CRC is funded by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinsch aft, DFG) and is designed to capture the complex nature of chronology, regional structure, climatic, environmental and socio-cultural contexts of major intercontinental and transcontinental events of dispersal of Modern Man from Africa to
Europe.
The sub-project explores anthropological models of hunter-gatherer social dynamics and seeks to relate these models to the theoretical idea of a frontier, which means explaining forms of social organisation as the outcome of a condition of gradual expansion, and
conversely this expansion as the result of specific social dynamics.
Candidates should be prepared to carry out a one year period of field research with a marginalised mobile group (e.g. hunter-gatherers or former hunter-gatherers) in Sub- Saharan Africa. Further requirements are a Master's degree in Anthropology or a neighbouring discipline and marks above average. Experiences in fieldwork are of advantage. The successful candidate will have to reside within commuting distance of the University of Cologne in order to be able to participate in the structured PhD study program of the CRC.
Applications should include a CV, academic certificates, an abstract (or section) of the MA thesis, and two references. Applications are to be sent in both hard copy and digital forms until 15 October 2009 to the address below. Final selection will be made following interviews
in mid-November 2009. Applications of women with equivalent qualifications are strongly encouraged. Handicapped candidates with equivalent qualifications will be given preference.
